The EAGLE
by GARY
1965

There once was an eagle, proud, bold and strong.
A bird of great strength with liberty his song.
He wielded great power and soared high and long.

His home was the highest peak from whence he surveyed
The extent of his vast domain and all God had made.

The eagle was known as Protector and Shield,
From all who destroy the nation and field.

The eagle's fame was soon to be spread,
And the doctrine he spoke was soon heard and read.

This eagle he stood for freedom so true,
And many he sheltered, but now there are few,
Stood for it too.

The eagle's now dead,
He lifts not his head.
His liberty gone and replaced by the mire,
"Let us do what our hearts desire."

The eagle's domain will now go unwatched.
The sky up above will forever be still.
For the country he watched
Will its own self kill.

The eagle's doctrine is no longer preached.
Who needs it, now that freedom is breached?
No one listens to his wisdom and truth,
The eagle's now fallen, and he was still in his youth.
