LETTER 1 of 2

Florence, Cal.
Aug. 31, '04

Mrs. J.F. Ahlstrom.
      Lordsburg,
          Cal.
Dear Mother:
It has been quite a while since I received your letter. Papa sold a doz. roosters today. You just ought to have seen those young chickens the other day. I felt awfully sorry for them but still I couldn't help laughing at the silly creatures. They were so terribly drunk that it was an impossibility for them to walk or see straight. It was just this way:- Grace had some spoiled fruit and she told me to feed it to the chickens. Well I thought it was rather funny stuff to give them; so I didn't do it. Well then papa comes along and tells me that I had better mix some bran in it and give it to the chickens. I didn't say any thing (but that was no sign that I didn't think any thing) for I supposed he knew what he was doing. Consequently the chickens received a delicious dish for breakfast the next morning. It was very warm that day and one rooster got his head caught between the fence and roost and choked to death. Well I didn't notice that there was anything the matter with them until evening. three were almost dead but I made them drink and walk around. All the others were so drunk that if they ran up against one another they would fall over. I let them out and saw that they got on the roosts that evening. The drunkest I had to put on boards so that they wouldn't fall. The next morning they were all right. None of them died which I think was a narrow escape.
Chicken-talk just about fill my letter up; so I guess I will stop.
We have three new baby girls in Florence. One at Nadeau's which was born this morning; and then there is one at Studar's, those people that live next to Latins. The other baby is at Steve's and they are very much delighted with her. I guess they will name her Ona Grace.
You remember the Pierce girls that went to school last year don't you? Well the youngest one that always flirted so, is married now. The paper gave her age 18 but I think she is younger. Kitty Durrell is also married at last and married to that Ray Ball. She must have wanted to get married real bad. I don't know what she thinks she is getting.
Clarence and Jennie were down Sunday afternoon. He is as jolly as ever.
I guess I have told you all the news so my letter must come to it's close.

Your loving daughter
Bertha Ahlstrom

P.S. Eleanor and Corinne came home Sunday. Elmo is sick so Aunt Nellie couldn't go to Chatsworth.
